Hey Todd and Charissa,

I am sooo stoked right now for two reasons. Reason one being that my custom Falcon should be very close to completion… but this is not the reason I am emailing you right now.

Right now I am in Costa Rica, on vacation, staying at out place in Playa Hermosa. I saw from your website and your facebook that you too had been to Playa Hermosa from seeing pictures at places like Jungle Surf Cafe and Wishbone.
Down here, my dad has 3 boards, a 6’6, a 6’7, and a 7 something Semi-gun. All of these are much too long for me so we went into Jaco in search of a used shortboard about 6’0 in the $200- $300 price range.
Spending over an hour seaching through over 6 surf shops, we found a couple of boards that would suit me, but not exactly what I wanted like a 5’11 that was very thin (maybe like 1 1/2′), a 6’0 that had been previously snapped and was in bad shape, and a bunch of great new boards that were over $600 dollars.
After our search through town, we had decided on a board, that was not great, but would work for about $350.
We went to dinner at Jungle Surf (our favorite place for breakfast and dinner) and we remembered that they had a couple of boards there too. So, we went into the shop and found a 5’8 board that was thicker and wider, so we figured it would be a suitable board and kind of fun. After, having dinner, we went into the shop to purchase the board and the girl running the shop told us that she had one more board in the back that she could sell to us.
We walk outside and the first thing I saw was the Proctor logo across the board. I flipped out, telling her how I knew the guy who shapes these boards and how he’s shaping me one back at home.
It is the Groveler IV model, 6’0 x 18 1/2 x 2 1/4. PERFECT. It was exactly what I wanted. Expecting it to be super expensive, I asked for the price and flipped out even more when she responded with: $250.
I am stoked beyond belief buying a Proctor board in Costa Rica, and then coming home to getting my custom Falcon.
I’m sure you remember shaping this board. Did you ride it, or did you sell it to someone, or did you sell it directly to Jungle Surf or what? I’m really interested in what this board did previously.

I’m stoked it landed in somebodys hands who will really appreciate it.  That was one of my favorite boards of all time, and i was kind of hesistant on selling it.  I hope he gets as many fun waves on it that i did.  I’m sure he will.

I have just rode it for the past 3 days and i cannot get off of it. Definitely the best shortboard I have ever ridden and it could not be more perfect for me and these waves.

10 Things to Look For in Your Shaper

1. Desire -This my sound like a no brainier, but a surfboard shaper with a true desire to please his customers will increase your chances of being stoked with your board and increase your level of fun.
2. Flexibility – Some shapers can be set in their ways regarding Surfboard design. Look for a shaper who is open to experimentation, new designs and new ideas; He’ll keep you on the cutting edge of surf craft design.
3. Knowledge – Shaping is a craft that requires not only talent but also a real understanding of key design elements. A good shaper can shape a board that works; a great shaper knows why the board works.
4. Availability – When ordering a custom surfboard from any shaper, communication is paramount. If they’re not available to personally speak to you, chances are they’re too busy to give you the attention you deserve.
5. Personality – It’s a good idea to maintain a long-term relationship with the shaper of your choice, so try to find someone who’s friendly and easy to get along with.
6. Style – Surfboards and surfing for that matter are all about style. A shaper with good style both in and out of the water will infuse his shapes and designs with his own style and flair.
7. Passion- In order to be great you have to love what you’re doing. Find a shaper who’s passionate about shaping surfboards.
8. Skill- These days technology is our friend and with the advent of cad shaping programs and shaping machines, technology has opened the door to a whole new world of design possibilities but the best shapers still have the skill required to hand shape as well (a key element in the world’s best shapers).
9. Value – Any good consumer knows you get what you pay for. A great shape can be altered by a poor glass job so look at the finished product; a shaper with attention to detail won’t stand for inferior craftsmanship and you get a great looking board that performs.
10. Experience – You can’t buy knowledge or experience which comes though years of effort and hard work. Ask a shaper about his background and look for someone who’s been mentored by a master and understands all aspects of the surfboard production process.

Our boards got here yesterday. I was really stoked when I saw mine and couldn’t wait to get it wet. The timing couldn’t have been any better either. All last week was flat and today a pretty good bump came in. We had about a four hour clean head high session. The board performed just as I imagined, it felt as if it were an extension of body. I came in and I’m resting now. The afternoon should be a little onshore and about chest. I think I’ll give it a run as a twin. I haven’t retired the long but I don’t it’ll be seeing action for a while.

Performance Twinner –

A new version of a design from a classic era….yup, the MR reign. Using one of my current rockers, a smoother transitioning forward outline, modern hull contours and a few different fin options, this board is a speedy wonderkind that is more versatile than it’s once-groundbreaking predecessors. By running a pretty flat rocker with a single-to-double-to-spiral vee bottom off the tail; you get a fast, free-riding screamin’ mimi. Fin options to run include: (1)large twins, (2)large twins with small trailer (3)twinzer, (4)thruster, or (5)thruster with little teeny twinzer/ turbulence blocker fins.
