This board is what I like to call “the-best-of-both-worlds” type of board…

Hello There!

my name is noella johnson and I would like to buy a board that will sorta do everything for me.

I am 5′ 4″, weight is 115lbs, age is 44 and getting back to surfing after 20yrs of motherhood.

So far, I’ve bee surfing off the coast of Seattle peninsula and Tofino in Vancouver Island(Canada). the waves there are very mushy and small compared to the waves in Tahiti I used to surf while growing up.

I would like a shortboard that will allow me to surf 2ft to 6ft tall without problem catching waves (my paddling power seems to have lessen now) and still have the ability to snap and slash. Also, my arm-reach will only allow me to hold boards that are less than 20″ wide. I do not favor twin fin but like the speed.

I may use that same board to surf in Mexico, Hawaii or Tahiti.

if you need further information, Please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank You

Noella

Hi Noella,

I am so sorry to have not gotten back to you sooner….have been really busy here after being out of town…

Anyway, I know the magic board for you: It’s called the Greased Pig.

This board generates tons of speed in small, gutless surf, yet will handle waves with more push with the responsiveness and maneuverability of a performance style shortboard up to head high or even slightly over.

It paddles into waves like a dream too due to a lower rocker/ bottom curve. This board is what I like to call “the-best-of-both-worlds” type of board….real fast when it’s small, yet performance oriented for when the waves are good. The best dimensions for you would be: 5’10” x 19” x 2 3/8”.

I have taken into account a little more board to make the transition back a smooth one for you so you can have a good time and rip it up!!

The fin set-up I recommend for this board is a thruster….gives the right amount of drive and hold to this particular design.

Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. I know you would be stoked on a magic Proctor.

Looking forward to your reply,

Aloha,

Todd

Hello Todd,

No worries for lateness, I myself just got back in town from surfing gutless knee high waves at Hobuck beach (Washington peninsula) for more than a week with a surfboard called “soul fish” by Surftech (6′ 6″ X 21 X 2 1/2 – Future fins: F3).

I don’t know if it’s the fins or the board that did not really meet my expectations….

I find it requires a wider stance for me to stand on the board and lacks the turning power.

How would the “Greased Pig” surfboard you have suggested compare to the “soul fish” I have tried ?

I like the name Greased Pig by the way :)

Hi Noella,

How was it for you paddling and catching waves on the 6’6”? Seems a bit big to me for a fish for you…

The Greased Pig is more shortboardy than a fish as far as maneuverability and responsiveness goes, but it carries a tremendous amount of speed as fish are known for.

It gets into waves very easily too which is a bonus and important part of a board like this. A smaller board won’t require you to have too wide a stance in order to get it to turn…..and the way this rocker and bottom is set-up, the board reacts really quickly to where you want to go. We may want to go a little bigger than 5’10”…..I’ll wait to determine more after I hear from you regarding the paddling and wave catching afforded to you from the 6’6” soul fish.

Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. I know the Greased Pig would be the one for you. Looking forward to your reply,

Aloha,

Todd

Hello Todd,
Paddling and catching waves was easy with the soul fish, which I liked. The board is very steady, it does not wobble or rock. It is fast but does not respond well like the “twin fang” or “little rascal” that I have seen on YouTube. I pretty much have to put my right foot down at 2/3rd of board towards the nose (where the logo is) in order for the board to move at max speed…and turning it was very slow in response.

I don’t mind going for a bigger or longer board than 5′ 10″ as long as it will make me stoked and happy on crappy waves…

Mahalo,
Noella
